The Catania Fish Market
There aren’t many places in Sicily where you are allowed a glimpse into the culture. The fish market in the eastern city of Catania is one of them. Admittedly, a lot of what is happening is theatre. But it’s also hard to cover up who you are as a person, and how you interact with others. Sicily presents an opaque face, but here’s a fleeting view into (male) culture.
Feeding the Flame – Photographing Artists
I started developing and printing black and white photos in 1965 and my first subject was a friend-artist. I haven’t changed much, I still have an affinity for photographing artists. These photographs are a collection of some of my favourite pictures.
View Camera Portraits
These pictures were taken with a camera and tripod the size of a small giraffe (not including the lighting gear). I wanted to be able to be able to make detailed life-size prints, which was a decided challenge at the time (1982). Using the view camera certainly upended my normal way of working. I enjoyed the ceremonial nature of taking these pictures, the result of how complex it was to use a large camera.
